Voyage to Crete: Iraklion

Crete may be best known for its ancient Minoan civilization, but the port city of Iraklion is also famous for its well-preserved Venetian walls and fortresses.

The Venetian Morosini Fountain—also known the “Lion Fountain”—in the heart of Iraklion is a popular meeting point. The café just beyond it, Kirkor, serves up a delicious Cretan specialty known as bougatsa, a pastry made of phyllo dough, stuffed with cheese and served sweet or savory.
