According to an inscription, the Porte d'Auguste, or Augustus Gate, was built in 15 B.C., under Augustus. It formed one of the formal, monumental approaches to the city at the end of the Via Domitia coming from Beaucaire on the west. The original structure had a two-story gate building in the center with a semicircular tower on each side, the lines of which are marked in the modern pavement in front of the gate. There was an inner courtyard, enclosed by the gate structure, and probably originally a monumental facade, similar to that on the exterior, where the gate opened into the city on the inside.
