Aphrodite in New York
November 24, 2003
by Mark Rose
Found in a child's tomb (12) at Kalavassos-Ayios Dimitrios, this silver figure represents a Hittite protective god on the back of a stag. It dates from between 1400 and 1200 B.C. The god's pointed cap and long, upturned boots are characteristic of the Hittites, who dominated Anatolia and northern Syria during the Late Bronze Age.
