Peter Damerow of the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science examined beer-brewing technologies of the Sumerians. “Given our limited knowledge about the Sumerian brewing processes, we cannot say for sure whether their end product even contained alcohol,†he wrote in the Cuneiform Digital Library Journal. Damerow died late last year.

Scientists from Waikato University in New Zealand will analyze the tooth enamel from toi moko, or preserved human heads, in order to identify their origins. Once their homelands are located, the Maori heads can be reburied.
A stone foundation at a historic house in Maine dates to the seventeenth century, according to archaeologist Neill DePaoli. He wants to find out if the site was used as a defensive garrison during the Anglo-Indian conflicts of the 1700s.
