The Roman Mosaic From Lod, Israel
Metropolitan Museum of Art,
New York City
Through April 3, 2011
During salvage excavations in 1996, a unique Roman mosaic floor dated to roughly A.D. 300 was found in Lod, Israel. Researchers believe the motifs, which depict a menagerie of animals, including an elephant, a giraffe, panthers, dolphins, and fish, as well as merchant ships with billowing sails, derive from North African art. The exhibition will travel across the U.S. before being installed at a new museum in Lod.
