The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) reports that its excavations have revealed evidence for a tenth-century Hindu temple at the site of the sixteenth-century Babri Masjid. The mosque was demolished in 1992 by Hindu fundamentalists who believed it stood on the ruins of a temple that marked the birthplace of Ram, one of the most revered deities in the Hindu pantheon. The ASI findings have caused a furor in academic and religious circles.
