Liberty Bell Basher Pleads Guilty Volume 55 Number 3, May/June 2002
by Eric A. Powell

Last year, drifter Mitchell A. Guilliatt attacked the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia with a hammer while shouting "God lives." Guilliatt said a biblical quotation inscribed on the bell, "Proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitants thereof," inspired him to "ring" it. He has now pleaded guilty to damaging an archaeological resource, a plea that could land him in jail for six months. Repairing five small dents on the bottom of the bell cost $7,093, which may come out of Guilliatt's pocket.
