By the time the Nabataeans and their site of Petra came of age in the first centuries BCE, Greco-Roman mythology was already well entrenched. First-century B.C. Greek historian Diodorus Siculus was, according to Martha Joukowsky's book Petra Great Temple, the first to mention the Petra of the Nabataeans.
